San Francisco based Bay Coffee is taking an ecofriendly approach to your next cup.

The family owned coffee company began as a tea shop in 19-78 in the San Francisco bay area. But it wasn't long before the Rogers family decided it could be something bigger.

“We sat around and wondered what else could we do to really grow the business? Someone said coffee, my brother, my sister I can't remember who and if we had said crumpets we wouldn't be talking to you right now.”

John Rogers is vice president of the company. Recently they cashed in on the single serving trend with the development of a cup that can be used in any Keurig type machine that can be turned into compost. Rogers says they wanted to create something that tasted better, is cheaper and doesn't harm the environment.  read more »

The Sense of Smell


Your sense of smell can rule your mind and control your cravings; and now it’s gaining power over your bank account.

The smell of fresh food can make you hungry and the smell of certain flowers can alleviate your stress. Now one company is hoping its scent will make you open your wallet.

In South Korea Dunkin Donuts recently launched a nasal assault aimed at getting people to buy their product. And their weapons of choice; coffee and city buses. The company installed devices on mass transit buses in the capitol city of Seoul that sprayed the scent of coffee at passengers whenever a Dunkin Donuts jingle was played on the loudspeaker.  read more »

Beetle in Your Coffee


Bet you didn’t know there were beetles in your coffee.

Bowing to pressure from its vegetarian customers; Starbucks has just announced that it is phasing out a key ingredient. The coffee powerhouse will now stop using a natural, government approved coloring made from crushed beetles. This coloring is used to make strawberry flavoring and is a staple in menu items such as frappuccinos, smoothies and some deserts.  read more »

Daily Indulgences


Daily indulgences can add up; and the tab is running higher for certain people.

According to a survey of spending habits in the workplace Americans spend more than $1,000 a year on coffee and another $2,000 on lunch. And while everyone is shelling out during the day, men and younger workers are spending the most.

The survey was conducted by Accounting Principles, a unit of the human resources company Adecco SA. It found that men spend about $47 a week on lunch compared to women who spend half that. Men also pay more for coffee and are more likely to complain about the caffeine options in office vending machines.  read more »
