Christmas Controversy

It wouldn't be the holiday season without a little festive tension.

The tree farms are barely in business but Hallmark is already apologizing for a Christmas tree ornament it recently released. It is a miniature Christmas sweater with the words “don we now our fun apparel.” Problem is the correct lyrics are “don we now our gay apparel” from the popular Christmas song “Deck the Halls.”

On Twitter Hallmark is apologizing for the change saying they have received a lot of angry comments from people. It says it never intended to offend or make political statements and in hindsight should never have made the switch.

Gay rights groups say the song lyrics have never been considered disrespectful and most say they don't understand why Hallmark felt it was necessary to omit the word. The leader of one group leader says he has received numerous calls about the ornament and wishes that much attention was given to insults to gays and lesbians such as the number of homophobic lyrics that make it into songs. Who knew a little fun could be so controversial.
