A Starring Role
One Hollywood actress is trying out a new role, as businesswoman.
Drew Barrymore is a familiar face on the big screen. Now she's bringing her star power to another industry; wine. I recently sat down with Drew at the Pebble Beach Food and Wine Festival to discuss "Barrymore;" her personal Pinot Grigio white wine.
She says it's more than just a label with a celebrity name.
"I have a hand in everything I do; I don't do it well otherwise. So for better or for worse if you don't like things about the wine, I'm somewhat to blame for it."
To produce her wine, Barrymore teamed up with the Decordi family. People she says understand what goes into a successful product.
"For us, it's about slow and steady wins the race. I didn't want to be a celebrity brand and have anyone think that I just threw my name on something that I didn't care about.
Talk about a role with substance.

What made you get into the wine business?
I love wine and I have really romantic experiences and a lot of journeys with it, my friends and I have enjoyed it over many a dinner party and I’ve studied and explored a lot of wine. I’m not a wine maker but I would love to become a wine curator and this was my first, this Pinot Grigio and I think we came out with something that I really fell on the sword for and was proud of.
Would you say Pinot Grigio is a woman’s wine?
I think Pinot Grigio is inherently feminine, absolutely it’s actually why I tried to counter balance it with a semi masculine label. We used my grandfather’s crest but I kept thinking it would be a gentleman’s business card, traditional old classy crisp but something modern. I know that’s unorthodox but I’m probably unorthodox in everything that I do.
So you certainly had your hand in the making of the label?
Absolutely I have a hand in everything I do; I don’t do it well otherwise. So for better or for worse if you don’t like things about the wine I’m somewhat to blame for it, but I also think on the other hand this is a wine made by extraordinary people, the Decordi family, and they grow it and bottle it so beautifully and our other motto is from our family to yours. And the fact that they’re a multi-generational family and in this particular business I’m so happy to be intended with them because it’s in keeping with what our wine is all about, made by people who love family who love wine who love to have people over for wonderful wine and food experiences.
Did you make a conscious decision to move forward with Pinot Grigio knowing it’s more of a feminine wine?
I think it would be crazy to think Pinot Grigio isn’t girly, women love our Pinot Grigio’s and we even put ice in our wine.
Do you think wine is an expensive business?
It is and for us it’s about slow and steady wins the race. I didn’t want to be a celebrity brand and have anyone think that I just threw my name on something that I didn’t care about. However that will be a much longer road for success for us because I don’t want to go a flashy route I love to be at wine festivals, I love when a chef will give the time and say we like this wine this is what it pairs well with, those are the days when I feel like I might be doing something right or enjoying what I do because the wine business is very tough and I would love to do it in a slow and steady wins the race and a classy and clever way. I want people to like the wine because they like it or don’t like it because they don’t like it I’d rather it have less to do with me than anything. I’m a curator I just want to bring it to people.
