Rent Your Ride

Looking for a quick mode of transportation? Try renting a car; from your neighbor.

Rental businesses in the San Francisco bay area are allowing people to rent out their own cars for some extra cash. One company called RelayRides gives San Francisco residents the chance to find and rent a car for as little as three dollars. The company launched in December and so far 2,500 people have signed up on the website to rent the 100 available cars.

Owners set the rate for their car and it ranges from $3 to $15 depending on the style. Then renters choose their car, receive a coded card that unlocks the door and goes on their way. The company screens all cars and drivers, provides insurance and takes a cut of the rental fee.

A similar company, called Getaround offers the same type of service except the cars are unlocked using a cell phone. Company founders say with limited parking spaces and parking fees it’s more convenient to have a car on an “only as needed” basis. Just as long as the owner and renter don’t need it at the same time.
