Is Thomas Jefferson a Prophet or Irrelevant?
If you’ve been a steady reader of this blog, you know I preface every new article with a relevant quote. But today, I go all out. A friend e-mailed me a group of Thomas Jefferson quotes from two centuries ago that seem prophetic given today’s economic mess. I’d like to pass them on for you to consider as we watch how politicians are spending our money.
“The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.”
“It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world.”
“I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.”
“My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.”
“The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.”
“To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.”
Very Interesting and Timely Quote:
In light of the present financial crisis, it’s interesting to read what Thomas Jefferson said in 1802:
“I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.”
Sober thoughts from a former President. Let me know if you agree that these quotes should be required reading for members of Congress?
Or do you just think Thomas Jefferson, one of the country's founders, is now irrelevant?

Irrelevant?
Jefferson's thoughts/quotes are definitely not irrelevant! All of the politicians in Washington should read these quotes!
I agree. Those who do not
I agree. Those who do not read the lessons of history are just plain stupid.
Misquotes
I'd do a little fact checking before posting any email forwards you receive:

Several of the other quotes are inaccurate as well.

Great person and great thoughts, read obligatory.
Thank you Brian for the
Thank you Brian for the "page of history". From the beginning we were born (I mean USA) as independent states with spotless mind with such great documents. And where do we go now? How can we influence the situation?
"Without knowing past you
"Without knowing past you can't build the future", it's in fact so otherwise you always will be doing the same mistakes.
Jefferson is on of
Jefferson is on of establishers of our statement, if don't know his thoughts, what development can be!!!
Let me remember you: "A Bill
Let me remember you: "A Bill of Rights is what the people are entitled to against every government, and what no just government should refuse, or rest on inference". We shouldn't forget this, or we'll stop exist as a State.
"An association of men who
"An association of men who will not quarrel with one another is a thing which has never yet existed, from the greatest confederacy of nations down to a town meeting or a vestry." I think we must take it on considerations our fight for the right.
But if we always will be
But if we always will be looking back, how can we go forward. I think we shouldn't spend so much time learning history. There were only wars, wars and wars, but we should build peaceful world.
No, no, no Kevin, you
No, no, no Kevin, you haven't understood I meant that if you don't know the past you can make mistakes that ever been made and instead of simply avoid wrong actions you'll do the same mistake one more time.
Sure, every American must
Sure, every American must know the history of establishment of our States. And it would be great, not only know, but understand it.
Yes, Tracy, the main word
Yes, Tracy, the main word "understand" it, because of without understanding our history we can't insist on fact that we are independent and democratic state.
Thomas Jefferson has some
Thomas Jefferson has some brilliant quotes, my favorite being “All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.”
We need more people like
We need more people like Thomas Jefferson these days. His keen instincts into the hearts of men is unique in American history. Great to have this info available.
Its amazing to me to think
Its amazing to me to think that our country was founded by such brilliant thinkers. Its because of them that we are celebrating this Independence Day.
My preferable quote of
My preferable quote of Jefferson: "It is a very dangerous doctrine to consider the [Supreme Court] judges as the ultimate arbiters of all constitutional questions. It is one which would place us under the despotism of an oligarchy".
I think we Americans have
I think we Americans have grown accustomed to the manure of Big Government and Bureaucratic Bull - and we enjoy wallowing in this political filth, just like pigs in the mud.
Well the blood of patriots
Well the blood of patriots has been shed at places like Waco and Ruby Ridge and who knows where else in the USA - but how come the blood of tyrants has not been shed, not even one drop? Or do Americans prefer slavery to freedom?
My favorite of Thomas
My favorite of Thomas Jefferson quotes is “Every generation needs a new revolution”. The best example is France, if anything goes wrong, they go on streets and make a "revolution".
